Buildings,  Environment and Surroundings

Steiner education recognises that children are affected by their environment. Castlemaine Steiner School and Kindergarten’s architect designed, rammed earth classrooms are aesthetically and thoughtfully decorated and make careful use of colour and shape to provide an atmosphere of harmony and beauty for the children to learn in.

Our building Master Plan can be viewed at the School. Already our buildings have been listed as a significant site in the Shire of Mount Alexander by the Architect’s Institute of Victoria. Our magnificent new Multi-Purpose building is available to the local arts community for performances and exhibitions.

The 10 year Master Plan is regularly reviewed and in 2006 is up to Stage 5 of an eight Stage plan. By 2007 we will have purpose-built Kindergarten and Prep classrooms, eight beautiful classrooms for Classes 1 to 8, a Multi-Purpose / Music Teaching facility, a Library, a purpose-built Eurythmy Room and utility areas. The school continues to attract Commonwealth capital works funding to assist in these major building programs.

The school play spaces continue to be developed. We have two ovals for ball sports, a hard court for basketball, volleyball and netball, and shade-covered sandpits for digging and construction. The junior playground boasts a creative wooden play frame built by Peter Foran, a parent in the school.  Materials are made available for the children to construct temporary cubbies.  The younger children in Kindergarten, Prep and Class 1, have their own beautiful play areas with cubbies, sandpits, swings and gardens.  The water areas of the school - dams and the creek - are not play areas.

The school prides itself on its beautiful architecture and environment, with large amounts of assistance from parents and friends of the school in the development of the school gardens.
